Looking for fall color without driving all the way to the mountains? The Upstate offers a moving display, from high ridgelines in early October to the shores of Lake Hartwell weeks later.

On October 12, regional tourism organization Lake Hartwell Country highlighted destinations across Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties where residents can enjoy changing leaves.

Why timing matters

Fall foliage usually appears first at higher elevations near the Blue Ridge Escarpment in early to mid-October. Color generally works downhill through late October, reaching Lake Hartwell around late October or early November.

Weather can shift the timing, so there is no single guaranteed peak weekend.

Where to look first

For broad mountain views, Sassafras Mountain in Pickens County has a 360-degree observation platform and free admission. Table Rock State Park offers lakeside scenery along its two-mile Lakeside Trail, plus more challenging mountain hikes.

In Oconee County, Wigington Overlook provides a roadside viewpoint, while Devils Fork State Park frames Lake Jocassee with wooded slopes.

Closer to Anderson

Not every colorful outing requires a mountain climb. Sadlers Creek State Park in Anderson and Lake Hartwell State Park in Fair Play are options for later-season shoreline views.

Near Clemson, the Experimental Forest offers waterfall trails, including Waldrop Stone Falls, with autumn color along the surrounding woodland.

Prefer a scenic drive?

The Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway, Highway 11, connects several mountain-area stops. Highway 178, also called the Mountain Highway, travels through the Jocassee Gorges area.

Choose a route that fits your time, bring a camera and check park access and current conditions before leaving.

The local takeaway

If the mountain leaves are already turning, don't assume you've missed the season around Anderson. The lower elevations and Lake Hartwell shoreline typically follow later, giving residents another chance to catch autumn at its best.

That makes fall color less of a one-weekend scramble and more of an excuse to explore the Upstate throughout October and into November.
