Anderson's Unhoused Residents Report Demolition of Makeshift Shelters

Dozens of unhoused people in Anderson, South Carolina, are without shelter after local authorities demolished a tent encampment near West Market Street, scattering personal belongings like food and clothing.

Residents such as Joshua Carroll say they were given only hours to pack, unable to retrieve their essential items before the area was cleared.

Many expressed frustration and heartbreak at the abrupt action, wondering why more compassion wasn't shown during the process.

Advocates like Patricia Jackson stress that Anderson’s growing homeless population — including families and veterans — needs greater support, not punitive sweeps.

With Anderson County cited as having the highest rate of homelessness in the Upstate, service providers say resources remain far too limited.

Authorities attribute responsibility for the cleanup to state agencies, while those displaced are left searching for safe places to sleep amid ongoing uncertainty.

Anderson County and Local Bank Unite to Support Food Banks Amid Federal Shutdown

Anderson County is teaming up with a local bank this November to boost support for area food banks facing soaring demand.

The drive follows a federal government shutdown on October 1, which suspended new SNAP benefit funding for the 2026 fiscal year.

This funding gap is leaving many low-income residents struggling to afford food.

Critical organizations like AIM, the Good Neighbor Cupboard, and The LOT Project are experiencing shortages as more families seek help.

This partnership aims to deliver extra resources and much-needed support, helping these food pantries serve vulnerable neighbors.

Residents can make a difference by donating non-perishable goods or funds at drop-off points across the county.

To get involved, contact the Anderson County Community Action Commission or visit their website for details.

Together, locals can help ease the burden for those impacted most by the shutdown.

Anderson City Council to Vote on Noise Ordinance and Business License Amendments

The Anderson City Council will soon decide on key updates to the city’s noise ordinance and business license rules.

Amid rising concerns over noise complaints, officials are seeking to clarify what counts as “unreasonable” noise and give police clearer authority to enforce new standards throughout all neighborhoods.

Enforcement would be driven by resident reports, while exemptions for events like weddings, funerals, and church gatherings recognize that not every loud activity is a public nuisance.

Individuals in violation may be fined between $500 and $1,032, with immediate enforcement possible after approval. Councilman Luis Martinez stressed the ordinance is meant to ensure fairness, not increase restrictions.

The council will also vote on changes to business license regulations, aligning tax rates with state mandates for uniformity across South Carolina.

This update, reflecting recent industry data, is expected to decrease city revenue by $119,000 in the 2026 fiscal year, already accounted for in budgeting.

Duke Energy Proposes Rate Hike in South Carolina

Duke Energy has proposed a 7.7% rate increase to the Public Service Commission of South Carolina, seeking an additional $150 million in revenue.

If approved, the average household using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month would see bills rise by roughly $10.38.

Commercial customers could encounter a 5.4% jump, while industrial customers may see rates climb by 5.2%.

Duke Energy says the hike will help strengthen the power grid, improve storm readiness, and boost plant efficiency.

The PSC has opened a series of public hearings for residents to voice opinions, with the latest session held at the Anderson County Council chambers.

Concerns about clean energy and affordability were raised, while Duke representatives addressed questions and feedback.

The Commission’s decision is expected by early 2026, and—if OK’d—the new rates would take effect March 1, 2026.

SCDPS Launches 'Operation Keep Us Safe' to Enforce Move Over and Hands-Free Laws

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety has launched 'Operation Keep Us Safe,' a statewide crackdown on Move Over and Hands-Free law violations after three troopers were struck during traffic stops, including the loss of Trooper First Class Dennis Ricks.

The campaign runs from September 15 to 19, mobilizing Highway Patrol and State Transport Police to prioritize these safety laws alongside other traffic violations.

South Carolina’s Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and switch lanes for stopped emergency vehicles with flashing lights, protecting first responders and roadside workers.

The Hands-Free Law bans holding a mobile device while driving, with initial warnings issued for violations during a 180-day grace period before fines begin in 2026.

Officials stress that distracted or careless driving puts lives at risk, urging all motorists to stay alert, respect speed limits, and safeguard everyone on the road.

Road Upgrades in Limbo, Plans Stall for S.C. Buc-ee’s

Plans to open a Buc-ee’s travel center in Anderson County have stalled over a major funding shortfall for vital infrastructure improvements.

The targeted site at Exit 21 on Interstate 85 needs extensive upgrades to manage expected traffic increases.

County Administrator Rusty Burns estimates the cost at $60 million.

So far, only $6 million has been secured — $1 million from Buc-ee’s and $5 million in federal support secured by Senator Lindsey Graham.

Buc-ee’s now owns the property but will not cover the $54 million gap.

The county is seeking new funding sources, including help from the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank, but the timeline is uncertain.

This uncertainty leaves the Buc-ee’s project, and needed upgrades for Exit 21, on hold as the community awaits updates.

Council Advances Plan to Let Voters Decide on Roads Funding

The Anderson County Council has advanced a proposal for a one-percent sales tax referendum, aiming to fund urgent road and bridge repairs throughout the county.

Projected to raise nearly $380 million over eight years, the tax would target infrastructure improvements without applying to essential items like groceries and gasoline.

All collected funds are legally mandated for road and bridge repairs, with transparency and public oversight built into the process.

To jump-start projects, officials advocate a $20 million bond, enabling immediate progress rather than waiting for tax revenues to accrue.

The tax proposal’s language and project list are clearly defined by the Capital Project Sales Tax Commission to ensure accountability.

Any surplus after completing prioritized repairs would support additional transportation needs.

Residents will decide this fall, with county leaders emphasizing clarity, transparency, and targeted investment in Anderson’s future transportation.

Kids ages 6 to 17 are invited to read aloud to animals at the shelter, a proven way to help shy dogs feel at ease—and to encourage more confident young readers.

Children must wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and review safety guidelines with a parent or guardian before participating, with an adult required during each session.

Readers are rewarded with bookmarks and special prizes as they reach reading milestones, making every visit both fun and meaningful for our youngest volunteers and shelter animals alike.
