Got a stack of old bank statements, expired paperwork or sensitive documents you have been meaning to get rid of?

An upcoming free community shred day in Anderson offers a convenient way to dispose of those papers while learning more about protecting yourself from identity theft.

Better Business Bureau of the Upstate and AARP South Carolina are teaming up for the Secure Your ID Shred Day event on Wednesday, October 21, at 10 a.m.

The event will take place at Anderson Mall, 3131 N. Main Street, Anderson, SC 29625.

What can you bring?

Residents and businesses may bring up to three banker-size boxes measuring approximately 10 by 12 by 15 inches, or three 13-gallon kitchen-size plastic bags, filled with documents for shredding.

The limit is three containers per consumer or business.

Cardboard boxes will be emptied and returned.

You do not need to remove staples, paper clips, binder clips, binders, rubber bands or CDs and DVDs from your paperwork before shredding.

Free hard drive wipes, too

Thanks to local partner PremierePC, the event will also offer free hard drive wipes that organizers say meet Department of Defense standards.

However, do not bring desktop computers, monitors, laptops, printers or external hard drives, as those items are listed among materials the event cannot accept.

Anyone interested in the hard drive service should check with organizers about which eligible drives can be accepted.

How the drive-through event works

For safety and traffic flow, attendees should remain in their vehicles while the shredding team handles the materials.

Organizers will not be able to accommodate people arriving on foot or those wishing to leave their vehicles to watch documents being shredded.

Shredding is offered first come, first served, until the trucks are full, so arriving early may help.

More than just shredding

Attendees can also pick up educational materials with practical tips for preventing identity theft and fraud, both online and offline.

Whether you are cleaning out a home office or finally tackling that pile of old records, this is a chance to clear some clutter and take a step toward keeping personal information secure.
