Innovative Program Combines Reading and Animal Companionship to Benefit Children and Shelter Pets |
Summer is here, and there's an exciting new opportunity for young readers and animal enthusiasts in our community.
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona (HSSA) has introduced the Paws and Pages Literacy Program, a unique initiative designed to enhance children's reading skills while providing comfort to shelter animals.
The program officially commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the HSSA's Education building.
In this program, children aged 6 to 17 are invited to read aloud to shelter pets, creating a soothing environment that benefits both the readers and the animals.
Studies have shown that shy and fearful dogs become more comfortable around humans when they are read to, and similar programs nationwide have demonstrated positive outcomes.
Participants are required to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and must review safety guidelines with a parent or guardian before their reading sessions.
Each child must have an adult present during their scheduled reading time.
To encourage continued participation, the program offers an incentive system.
Children receive an HSSA bookmark upon completing training and earn additional rewards after completing 2, 5, and 10 hours of reading to shelter pets.
For more information or to register your child for the Paws and Pages Literacy Program, please contact Monica Kothe at [email protected] or call 520-327-6088 ext. 125.
Let's make this summer memorable by fostering a love for reading and providing comfort to our furry friends in need. |
