City Council Approves Major Housing Project Amid Community Debate |
A significant housing development featuring over 700 beds is set to transform downtown Clemson.
The Clemson City Council recently approved a 760-bed project located at the intersection of College Avenue and Riggs Drive.
The development will consist of two buildings: one five stories tall and the other eight stories.
During a recent council meeting, community members expressed strong opinions about the project.
"We're not asking for nothing. We're asking for compromise. We're asking for a discussion," said local resident Devon Gorry.
Another resident questioned the benefits for the community, stating, "What is the city getting? The neighbors are not getting anything."
City officials detailed that the development will include over 700 beds, 13,000 square feet of commercial space, and a parking garage with 150 public parking spaces.
Additionally, the project plans to restore and preserve an active stream on the site.
Councilman Adam Jones supported the project, emphasizing its alignment with the city's comprehensive plan and thorough vetting by various boards and staff.
He acknowledged that while the decision may not please everyone, he believes it is the most responsible outcome for the community.
The council approved the project with a 5-2 vote, with Councilmembers Smith and Sherill dissenting.
Developers aim to break ground by March of next year. |
