Anderson, SC — June marks Zero Tolerance for Litter Month in South Carolina, and Anderson County is taking the initiative seriously.

Environmental enforcement officers have hit the streets in partnership with PalmettoPride and the South Carolina Litter Control Association to crack down on littering, illegal dumping, and uncovered loads across the county.

Increased Enforcement Across Anderson County

Throughout June, Anderson County environmental enforcement officers are stepping up patrols and inspections as part of this statewide summer initiative.

The campaign specifically targets three major violations:

Littering from vehicles and pedestrians

Illegal dumping on public and private property

Uncovered or unsecured loads on trucks and trailers

This week, officers have been stationed at Anderson County convenience centers, issuing warning tickets and providing citizens with free tarps to help secure their loads and reduce roadside litter.

Why It Matters

Litter isn't just an eyesore — it has real consequences for Anderson County's environment, economy, and community pride.

According to PalmettoPride, South Carolina's leading litter prevention organization, the state has seen a 60% reduction in litter since these coordinated efforts began in the late 1990s.

Anderson County has long been a leader in environmental stewardship.

In 2016, Anderson County became the only county in South Carolina to reach SCDHEC's 40% recycling rate goal, achieving an impressive 42% recycling rate.

Know the Fines

Under South Carolina Code of Laws § 16-11-700, litter violations carry serious penalties:

Littering (< 15 lbs): Up to $377.50 + 8 hours community service

Illegal Dumping (< 15 lbs): Up to $601.25 + 16 hours community service

Illegal Dumping (15-500 lbs): Up to $1,327.50 + 16-32 hours community service

Illegal Dumping (500+ lbs): Up to $2,605.00 + community service as ordered

Note: Fines include state assessments and court costs.
