County adds roughly 19,000 residents since 2020 as Upstate continues to attract out-of-state relocations
ANDERSON, SC — Anderson County has reached a population milestone, with 2026 estimates putting the county at approximately 223,000 residents. The growth marks an increase of roughly 19,000 people since the 2020 Census, cementing the county's position as one of South Carolina's fastest-growing regions.
Population Growth by the Numbers
According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and World Population Review, Anderson County has seen consistent growth over the past several years:
• 2020 Census: 203,718 residents • 2025 Estimate: 219,930 residents • 2026 Estimate: 222,000–223,500 residents
This represents a growth rate of approximately 9.3% over six years, outpacing many other counties in the state.
What is Driving the Growth
Much of Anderson County's population increase is attributed to people relocating to the Upstate from other states. The area's combination of affordable housing, strong job market, quality of life, and proximity to major cities like Greenville and Atlanta has made it an attractive destination for families and professionals seeking a change.
The City of Anderson itself has also experienced significant growth, with estimates putting the city's 2026 population at approximately 31,700 residents, up from 28,106 in 2020.
Impact on the Community
The rapid population growth brings both opportunities and challenges for Anderson County. Local businesses are seeing increased demand, new housing developments are underway, and infrastructure improvements are being planned to accommodate the growing community.
"This growth reflects what many of us already know — Anderson is a great place to live, work, and raise a family," said local officials. "We're working to ensure our infrastructure and services keep pace with this growth while maintaining the quality of life that attracts people here."
Looking Ahead
With no signs of slowing down, Anderson County is poised to continue its growth trajectory. The county's strategic location along the I-85 corridor, combined with ongoing economic development efforts, suggests the population will likely continue to rise in the coming years.
For residents and business owners, the growth represents a dynamic, evolving community with new opportunities on the horizon.
