After more than a decade at the helm, James P. Clements has announced his retirement as president of Clemson University, effective December 31.
In a heartfelt letter to the Clemson community, Clements expressed his deep appreciation for the university and its members, describing his tenure as an incredible journey.
"Serving as president of Clemson University has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Clements stated. "Clemson is more than a university to me—it is home. I am profoundly grateful to the Board of Trustees, our leadership team, and the entire Clemson family for their trust, support, and friendship throughout this incredible journey."
Under Clements' leadership, Clemson achieved significant milestones, including attaining R1 research status and securing two college football national championships. His tenure also saw substantial growth in admissions, enrollment, and fundraising efforts.
The Board of Trustees is scheduled to meet via teleconference on Wednesday, December 10, at 2 p.m. to honor Clements' legacy and initiate the search for new leadership. The agenda includes naming interim leadership and forming a presidential search committee. The meeting will be streamed live on the university's website.
