The 240,000-square-foot facility features modern classrooms, top-tier athletic spaces, and advanced security systems
Pendleton, S.C. — After years of planning and a community investment that sparked debate, Pendleton High School is ready to open its doors to a brand-new campus designed to serve Anderson County's growing population for generations to come. The 240,000-square-foot facility represents more than just new construction—it's a commitment to educational excellence and community continuity.
A Vision Years in the Making
For Principal Matthew Moore, who spent five years as assistant principal before becoming principal four years ago, opening a new school has been a career aspiration. The opportunity to put his fingerprints on everything—from room assignments and furniture to common spaces—has been both exhilarating and deeply meaningful.
"This is something I had always hoped to do professionally," Moore said, reflecting on the journey that brought the community to this moment.
Built for Growth
District leaders recognized the need for expanded facilities as new houses and developments appeared throughout surrounding neighborhoods at a pace that made delay look like negligence. Without the new building, the district would have been forced toward portable classrooms—a solution Moore called expensive and deeply detrimental to learning, especially in a district expected to keep growing.
The new campus directly addresses that challenge with:
Modern instructional spaces with natural light and tall ceilings
State-of-the-art technology including ViewSonic smart boards and upgraded networks
Flexible learning environments designed for collaboration and adaptability
Two collaborative commons for student gathering and group work
An internal courtyard where classes can meet when weather permits
Athletics and Wellness
The commitment to student development extends beyond the classroom. The new campus features impressive athletic facilities:
A new weight room for strength training and conditioning
A modern gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and assemblies
A dedicated training room for athlete care and rehabilitation
A 40-yard practice field for football and other outdoor sports
Safety First
Security was a top priority in the campus design. The new building includes:
Ballistic-resistant window treatments throughout the facility
AI-based weapons-detection system integrated into approximately 100 cameras
A badge system that can trigger different response levels—from medical emergencies to lockdown alerts
A fully enclosed courtyard allowing students outdoor access while remaining within the protected perimeter
But Moore emphasizes that technology is only part of the safety equation. "The best security measure is the people who know the students," he said. In a school like Pendleton, faculty, guidance staff, and administrators know the children, their families, their problems, and the signs that something is wrong.
Community Connection
What makes Pendleton High special isn't just the new building—it's the community it serves. Generations of families have walked these halls, creating a continuity that fosters deep institutional memory and genuine care for one another.
That care extends beyond academics. The guidance staff knows every student by name, understands who may be hungry or housing-insecure, and recognizes the quiet signs that a student needs support before they can ask for it themselves.
Delivered on Time, Under Budget
The referendum that funded the school was divisive at the time, but the finished building has largely transformed public sentiment. The district will be able to say it delivered the project on time and under budget—a feat Moore described as unusual for public education and government alike.
The actual tax impact has also been less than expected because property values in the area rose faster than projected.

Public tours of the new campus will begin on July 27, giving residents a chance to see where their investment went and experience the future of education in Anderson County.
