Community Celebrates Milestone as Runway 17/35 Reopens After Extensive Reconstruction |
Anderson Regional Airport has marked a significant milestone with the reopening of Runway 17/35, welcoming its first official landing after an extensive reconstruction project.
The secondary runway, originally constructed in 1966, underwent a comprehensive overhaul to enhance safety and accommodate a broader range of aircraft.
The reconstruction involved removing the existing 25-foot-wide paved shoulders and implementing Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) techniques.
This process included laying approximately 12,900 tons of asphalt at a depth of four inches, ensuring a durable and smooth surface for aviation operations.
Additionally, the project encompassed upgrades to the lighting and electrical systems associated with Runway 17/35 and its connecting taxiways, further improving operational efficiency. |
Airport Manager Brett Garrison emphasized the importance of maintaining a secondary runway, stating that it provides critical flexibility for pilots, especially during shifting wind conditions or routine maintenance.
He noted that when an accident occurs or maintenance is required, the airport doesn't have to shut down, highlighting the strategic advantage of the reconstruction.
The successful completion of this project not only enhances the airport's infrastructure but also strengthens its role as a vital hub for commerce and travel in Anderson County and the surrounding areas.
Local pilots, business travelers, and aviation enthusiasts are celebrating this boost in capability, recognizing the positive impact on the community's connectivity and economic growth.
As the airport continues to evolve, this development signifies a renewed commitment to providing top-tier aviation facilities for the region. |
