Upstate Nonprofit's First Relief Flight Departs for Jamaica Post-Hurricane Melissa

In the early hours of Wednesday, a private aircraft loaded with essential supplies departed from Anderson Regional Airport in South Carolina, bound for Montego Bay, Jamaica. This mission, spearheaded by the Upstate-based nonprofit Jamaica Relief Ministries in Anderson SC, aims to provide critical aid to communities devastated by Hurricane Melissa.

The cargo included baby formula, bottled water, nonperishable food items, and other necessities. Duane Cross, the organization's executive director, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "Right now, people are not asking for new roofs and new houses. They're asking for water, and then, they're asking for food, in that order."

Jamaica Relief Ministries has been active on the island for over two decades. This flight marks their initial response following the hurricane's landfall, which brought winds reaching 185 mph and caused widespread destruction. Cross highlighted the organization's commitment: "It is definitely a crisis, and we want to go down and care for people right where they are, children especially, and their families."

The nonprofit operates several thrift stores across Anderson, Abbeville, and Greenwood counties. These outlets are currently accepting donations of canned goods, diapers, baby wipes, and bottled water. The collected items will be shipped to Jamaica to support ongoing relief efforts. Cross noted that this flight is the first of many planned missions, acknowledging that the need for assistance will persist for some time.

In related developments, Anderson Regional Airport recently received a $350,000 grant to construct an aviation-themed playground. This project aims to enhance the airport's role as a community asset and inspire local youth to explore careers in aviation and STEM fields.
