South Carolina's eagerly awaited annual Sales Tax Holiday is set to commence at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 1, and will continue through Sunday, August 3, 2025.

During this 72-hour period, shoppers can purchase a variety of back-to-school items without the burden of the state's 6% sales tax, as well as any applicable local taxes.

Eligible tax-free items encompass a broad range of products, including clothing, footwear, school supplies, backpacks, computers, printers, and certain bed and bath items.

It's important to note that while many items are exempt, certain products remain taxable during the holiday.

Non-exempt items include jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, furniture, and items placed on layaway.

Additionally, portable devices primarily used for telephone calls, listening to music, watching videos, or reading books do not qualify for the tax exemption.

Retailers across the state are gearing up for one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Historically, the tax-free weekend ranks as the third busiest shopping period in South Carolina, surpassed only by the weekends following Thanksgiving and before Christmas.

In 2024, shoppers took advantage of the holiday to purchase more than $22.3 million in tax-free items, resulting in savings exceeding $1.3 million in sales tax.

Both in-store and online purchases of eligible items qualify for the tax exemption.

Shoppers are encouraged to check with local retailers to confirm participation and to explore online shopping options, including delivery and curbside pickup.

For a comprehensive list of exempt and non-exempt items, as well as additional details about the Sales Tax Holiday, visit the South Carolina Department of Revenue's official website.

Plan ahead and make the most of this opportunity to save on essential items for the upcoming school year.
