ANDERSON, S.C. — The annual South Carolina Tax-Free Weekend is almost here, giving families a chance to save on back-to-school essentials. The sales tax holiday runs Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, covering everything from notebooks and backpacks to computers and clothing.

The Anderson Twist

Here's where it gets a little awkward for Anderson families. Anderson School District's starts classes on Thursday, August 6 — one day before the tax-free weekend begins. That's right, kids will already be in their desks while parents are still waiting to buy those last-minute supplies without paying sales tax.

So if you're an Anderson parent, you have a couple options: send your student to school with an empty backpack and a promise that "the supplies are coming, I swear" or bite the bullet and pay the tax on August 5th. Decisions, decisions.

What's Tax-Free?

The South Carolina Department of Revenue has outlined exactly what qualifies for the exemption. Here's what you can grab without paying state sales tax:

School Supplies

Pens, pencils, paper, binders, folders, calculators, and all the usual classroom essentials are covered. If it goes in a backpack or sits on a desk, it's probably tax-free.

Clothing and Footwear

New and used clothing and shoes are exempt, which means you can stock up on jeans, shirts, socks, and sneakers for the whole family. Just leave the designer handbags and jewelry at home — those aren't included.

Computers and Tech

Laptops, desktops, tablets, and software all qualify, making this the perfect time to upgrade that aging family computer. Printers, keyboards, and other accessories are also covered.

Bed and Bath Items

Sheets, towels, blankets, and shower curtains are tax-free too. It's not just for students — anyone looking to refresh their home can take advantage.

What to Skip

Not everything gets the tax break. Cell phones, video game consoles, cameras and furniture still come with sales tax attached. The state is generous, but not that generous.

Shopping Tips for Anderson Families

With school starting August 6th for many Anderson students, timing is everything. If you need supplies for that first day, you might have to shop early and pay the tax. But for bigger purchases — computers, clothing, bedding — waiting until the weekend could save you real money.

Local retailers across Anderson are expecting crowds, so plan accordingly. Early morning shopping on Friday or Sunday evening tends to be less chaotic than Saturday afternoon.

The tax-free weekend ends at midnight on Sunday, August 9, so don't wait until the last minute. Your wallet — and your student's teacher — will thank you.
