October 2025 brings a celestial spectacle with a supermoon and two meteor showers lighting up the night sky.
The month begins with the Harvest Supermoon on October 6, reaching full illumination at 11:47 p.m. Eastern Time. This supermoon appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon due to its proximity to Earth.
Following the supermoon, the Draconid meteor shower peaks on October 8. Originating from the constellation Draco, this shower typically produces up to 10 meteors per hour. However, the bright moonlight from the recent supermoon may obscure some of the fainter meteors.
Later in the month, the Orionid meteor shower peaks on October 21. With the new moon providing dark skies, observers can expect around 20 meteors per hour. The Orionids are known for their fast, bright meteors, remnants of Halley's Comet.
For optimal viewing, find a location away from city lights and allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Remember to dress warmly and check local weather forecasts for clear skies.
