Lake Hartwell Splash Away The Trash Cleanup Returns This Fall — Here's How to Join

Lake Hartwell Partners for Clean Water (LHPCW) is gearing up for its fall cleanup event and volunteers across the region are invited to help keep the lake's drinking water clean. The bi-annual Splash Away The Trash initiative returns this season with multiple cleanup locations on both the South Carolina and Georgia sides of the lake.

Since launching in spring 2023, LHPCW — in partnership with the Lake Hartwell Association — has organized three successful cleanups. The results are impressive: 53.5 miles of shoreline cleaned, 16,707 pounds of trash removed and 452 volunteers have pitched in to make it happen. That haul includes 464 bags of trash, 24 dock floats and 25 car tires pulled from the water.

How the Cleanup Works

Participating is simple. Volunteers can choose one of the designated cleanup locations and sign up, or request supplies to clean their own spot around the lake. Here's how it works:

Step 1: Pick a location and arrive on event day to grab your supplies

Step 2: Clean up anytime throughout the weekend

Step 3: Drop off collected trash by Monday morning at the site where you picked up supplies

Can't make it to one of the listed sites? No problem. Volunteers can choose their own location around the lake and request cleanup supplies from the team. Simply reach out to the clean team contacts to coordinate.

Community Partners Making It Happen

The cleanup is made possible through partnerships with community volunteers, lake property owners, local businesses, diver groups, county agencies and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT).
